Baby Tooth Decay Problem
To prevent tooth decay and keep your children’s teeth as healthy as possible, the same principles mentioned earlier apply. Keep sugars and
starches away from your child’s teeth as much as possible.
Remember these convert into acid that eats away at the tooth enamel. Instead, babies and toddlers should drink cooled, boiled water between
meals and well diluted fruit juice or squashes at mealtimes only.
Also avoid giving your child baby foods with added sugar, and ask your pharmacist for sugar free medicines. If you can, wean your baby onto a
feeding mug at six months as drinking from a bottle increases the risk of tooth decay.
Finally, if possible, brush your child’s teeth immediately after meals particularly if they have been high in carbohydrates.
For older children, the guidelines set out earlier also apply. Remember that your child’s teeth are most at risk of dental caries, so if she
subsists on a diet of cola and candy, she is likely to end up with a mouth full of rotten teeth.
Countless children end up having their teeth extracted because their parents have not kept sugars and starches in their diet under
control.
Not only does an excess of sugary foods put your child at risk for obesity and diabetes, but it can severely damage her oral health too. A
feeding cup is better than a bottle as there is less contact between the juice and teeth.
Avoid baby foods with added sugar and buy sugar free medicine. Teaching sound oral hygiene at a young age will ensure good habits for a
lifetime of healthy teeth. Children’s toothbrushes are colorful and fun.
Select age appropriate ones for your children or let them make their own choices. A little teething gel or powder applied directly to the gums
will help to ease the pain.
